The Spanish Association of greenkeepers along with the Real Federación Española de Golf have launched this year’s volunteer programme to prepare for The 2014 Open de España. Volunteers will join Camiral Resort’s course management team during the week of the Sapnish Open to help with maintenance and course preparation duties. Coordinating this 50 strong-team will be Camiral Resort’s Head Greenkeeper David Bataller who has been charged with the important task of providing a championship-ready Stadium Course for the players in May. “Having welcomed the Final Stage of the European Tour Qualifying School less than six months ago, we have continued to maintain the Stadium Course to very high standards,” commented David Bataller. “This year, players will be faced with a slightly different and upgraded layout to that which was played during the last Open de España which was held at Camiral Resort in 2009. “Two years ago, we switched the grass type on our fairways to resilient, drought-resistant Bermuda grass – the same variety used at Augusta National, home of the Masters – and lengthened the course to 7,333yds (6,705m). The course also has seven new championship tees, tougher waterside greens and new bunkers.” David Bataller added: “Year-on-year we strive to have the best facilities in Spain, Europe and worldwide, and there is no greater recognition than to have been selected to host this year’s Open de España. “We look forward to having the eyes of the world on Spain’s number one course in May and wish each player the very best of luck.”
